B Cells
General Info
B lymphocytes, or B cells, are a subset of adaptive immune cells that start maturation in the fetal liver and postnatal bone marrow. B cells are known for supporting humoral immunity through antibody production, but also carry out other key functions such as phagocytosis and antigen presentation. Cells committed to the B cell lineage express CD19 and other markers during maturation and differentiation. B cells remain an active area of research because they play a critical role in the immune system. Perturbations in B cell development or function are implicated in several disease states. Understanding the basis of B cell function and dysfunction is of interest for the development of new vaccines and therapies.
